Real DIY Repair Stories from Homeowners

Replaced the drain pump and my dishwasher works like new

by Karen T. from Denver, COtoday

Repair Time Estimate
45 minutes

Our Whirlpool dishwasher started leaving standing water at the bottom after every cycle. I checked the filter first and it was clean. Then I ran the garbage disposal thinking it might be a shared drain issue but that did not help either. After some research I figured it was most likely the drain pump. I ordered the replacement pump from PartsDiscount.com and it arrived in two days. The swap itself was pretty straightforward — I just had to remove the lower kick plate, disconnect the old pump, and snap the new one in. Took maybe 45 minutes total. Dishwasher has been draining perfectly ever since.

Replaced the bake element and our oven heats perfectly again

Our GE oven stopped heating completely — the broil element worked fine but the bottom bake element was totally dead. I could actually see a small crack in the element where it had burned through. Ordered the replacement bake element which was surprisingly affordable. The repair was one of the easiest I have ever done. Just removed two screws holding the old element in place, pulled it forward, disconnected the wires, and connected the new one. The whole thing took 15 minutes. Oven preheats to 350 in about 10 minutes now just like it used to. Definitely recommend trying this yourself before paying for a service call.

Condenser fan motor swap brought our fridge back to life

Noticed our Samsung refrigerator was not keeping things cold anymore. The freezer side was barely cool and the fridge section was getting warm. I pulled the fridge away from the wall and could hear the compressor running but the condenser fan was not spinning at all. The motor had burned out. I found the exact replacement fan motor online and it arrived within a few days. Installation required removing a small access panel on the back and swapping a few wire connectors. The hardest part was honestly just moving the fridge. Within a few hours of the repair everything was back to the right temperature. Really glad I did not have to call a technician for this one.

Lid switch replacement fixed our washer that refused to spin

30 minutes

Our top-load Kenmore washer would fill with water and agitate just fine but when it came time to spin it would just sit there. Clothes were coming out soaking wet. I did some troubleshooting and found out the lid switch was the most common cause. Sure enough when I tested it with a multimeter it showed no continuity. Ordered a new lid switch assembly and installed it myself. Had to remove a few screws and unplug the old connector. The whole repair took about 30 minutes and the washer has been spinning strong ever since. Saved us from buying a whole new machine.
